Otis by Harter is the ideal multi-tasker, attentively offering guests a seat to meet or lounge
This hybrid design is at home in a conference room or reception area
CHICAGO - June 2009 - Otis is Harter’s contemporary take on the modernist classics - with scale, innovative materials and colors that are culturally relevant to today’s office, hospitality and healthcare spaces.
The perfect hybrid between a side and lounge chair, Otis centers on a molded piece of Petra polymer, whose high level of post-consumer material allows the chair to achieve an aggregate post-recycled content of close to 50 percent. The versatile back insert creates a colorful accent for lounge seating in a reception area or conference room, as well as an executive office guest chair.
The creation of an "essential chair" is the inspiration for Otis by Harter, designed by bangdesign. "This is a chair that combines the essential and long-held comfort and functionality requirements of a seat, back and arms in one single, simple, pure form or shape," says David Granger of bangdesign. "In some ways, it is the simplicity of Otis and the apparent ease in which it integrates the seat, back and arms into a confident (yet unassuming) chair that is its most enduring feature."
The balanced interplay of angles and shapes within the body and leg forms creates a stance of poise and grace. Simple detailing of the horizontal split-line between the top-of-the-arms and the backrest quietly elevates the overall aesthetic. That horizontal split-line also provides an extra layer within the design of Otis, while at the same time lowering the chair’s perceived center-of-gravity with a clear or translucent backrest.
An efficient, low-density stacking chair, Otis by Harter is designed for a long life. Its simple yet sturdy construction allows use and re-use over an extended period of time.
About bangdesign
bangdesign is an Australian based design studio founded by Bryan Marshall and David Granger in 1989. At all times, bangdesign seeks diversity, insight and collaboration in its design projects to cultivate new ideas and a broader appreciation. For us, design is a verb not a noun. It is a problem-solving process where everything is questioned in order to unearth better answers. bangdesign pursues an all-embracing approach, not just design in isolation but pushing the boundaries of the entire project and how it connects with people.
